How Scouting Works

Scouting is a year-round program designed to meet the needs of young people and their families. The mission of Scouting America is to prepare youth to make ethical and moral choices throughout their lives by instilling the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

The program is delivered through local civic, faith-based, and educational institutions known as chartered organizations. These organizations operate Scouting units that serve youth and the broader community. Nearly one million dedicated adult volunteers nationwide help guide Scouts as they learn, grow, and lead.

Cub Scouts

Motto: Do Your Best!

Cub Scouts builds the foundations of leadership, citizenship, and personal fitness through fun, age-appropriate activities that actively involve parents and legal guardians. Scouts are organized into grade-based Dens, each led by an adult Den Leader.

Cub Scouting encourages family participation while exploring the outdoors, completing hands-on projects, making friends, and developing a lifelong love of learning. Scouts earn patches and recognition connected to their grade level as they advance.

Through adventures focused on hiking, nature, science, citizenship, first aid, sports, and more, Cub Scouts progress toward their rank. Completed adventures are recognized with adventure loops or pins.
